At the De'VIA Deaf Artist's Exhibit

Here I am (a bit disheveled and windburned) at the Woodbury Art Museum in Orem, UT April 2008 with three of my "Eye-Hand-Heart" cyanotypes that were selected for the De'VIA show. The works selected were "Positive/Negative", "Reaching", and "Chain Eye". This was the first Deaf Artist's Exhibit, in conjunction with the third biennial Deaf Studies Today! conference (and also the first International Deaf Film Festival), and hopefully there will be many more. The entire shebang ran April 8-12 at Utah Valley State College (now Utah Valley University). I really enjoyed myself, watching the excellent selection of movies in the film festival, checking out a few of the presentations at the conference, explaining my artwork at the museum to school groups, and taking time out to photograph the surrounding mountains.
In case you're wondering, De'VIA stands for "Deaf View/Image Art" as stated in the De'VIA Manifesto: "De'VIA represents Deaf artists and perceptions based on their Deaf experiences. It uses formal art elements with the intention of expressing innate cultural or physical Deaf experience. These experiences may include Deaf metaphors, Deaf perspectives, and Deaf insight in relationship with the environment (both the natural world and Deaf cultural environment), spiritual and everyday life...."
